Since we came out of lockdown and businesses reopened, there has been a massive employee shortage. While people feel more secure in their jobs right now because of this, there is low morale. This is because they are being overworked and underpaid. The holidays always raise the demand for seasonal workers, but they need help now more than ever this year.
Some businesses offer higher pay rates and sign-on bonuses, but it is still not enough to live on. A significant issue is the cost of childcare, which was high before the general cost of living skyrocketed this year. Plus, nobody wants to take on a job where they will be worked to the point of mental and physical exhaustion. We are in the middle of a global pandemic, which is just another cause for anxiety and the desire to work from home.
Retailers and restaurants are so busy right now, and many workers are finding it hard to cope with the workload. So if you are shopping or dining out, remember to be kind to those choosing to work.
