Grants vs Student Loans: Know the Difference

By Grants Opportunities

What are grants?

Grants are supported by the College and the federal and state governments and are provided based on need. The timely filing of the FAFSA each year and documented need and sufficient academic progress are all requirements for need-based aid renewal.
The federal government provides loans to help students bridge the gap between the cost of attendance and other financial aid available.

What are loans?

Loans are funds given to an applicant that will be repaid in the future with the agreed interest. Only subsidized loans are included in the College’s financial aid awards, and the loan amount provided each year will rise according to the chart below. Depending on eligibility, additional loans may be acquired to cover the expected family contribution.
College loans may be available to graduate and undergraduate students studying part-time. Loans come with terms and conditions, as well as interest rates.

Examples/ popular loans

  • Direct Loans from the Federal Government

Subsidized– Subsidized loans have a set interest rate and do not begin charging interest until after graduation. The origination fee for federal student loans is deducted automatically from the loan amount. Only undergraduate students are eligible for these loans based on financial need. The amount of your loan is determined in part by which school you attend. While interest begins to accrue right away, the US Department of Education pays your interest while you’re in school.
Unsubsidized – unsubsidized loans have a fixed interest rate and accumulate interest upon distribution. The origination fee for federal student loans is deducted automatically from the loan amount. These student loans are given to graduates and students who do not have a financial need. The amount of your loan is determined in part by the school you attend and the cost of attendance. Interest begins to accumulate immediately, and you are responsible for repaying the loan in full, including interest.
Federal direct graduate plus
Graduate students who require additional support beyond the unsubsidized loans can apply for a federal direct graduate PLUS loan if they meet the credit standards.

  • Private Loans

These loans are funded by private institutions and may not have the same benefits as federal loans, and they may also have higher interest rates.

Examples/ popular grants

  • Grants for College Grants, largely from the federal and state governments, are referred regarded as “gift aids” because they do not require repayment, unlike student loans. College grants are given out based on financial need and include the following:
Pell Grants from the federal government – Pell Grants are a critical source of federal student financial aid for students with extraordinary financial needs enrolled in their first undergraduate program. Once a student qualifies for a Pell Grant, they can apply for other types of financial aid.
  • State Grants – To assist with educational costs, the student’s home state government may offer grants for college.

Best Grants Available for College Students

By Grants Opportunities

A grant is a type of financial aid that provides a set amount of money each year. Grants, unlike loans, are not repaid and are given based on merit or need. Grants are most commonly given out by the federal government, state commissions, and private or non-profit organizations.

The majority of students who plan to attend college are looking for ways to supplement their school budget. Paying for a college education is nearly impossible without financial aid. College grants make it easier to finance the high cost of tuition, whether you’re a first-year student or a Ph.D. candidate. These are some of the best college grants available.

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant program is awarded by the U.S. Department of Education based on financial need to students who file a FAFSA form for a maximum of $5,815 for 12 semesters. To be eligible, candidates must be enrolled full-time or part-time in their first associate or bachelor’s degree program at an accredited U.S. college for the entire academic year. The monetary value will differ depending on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and the cost of attendance.

Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant

The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant is another federal grant for college that can provide up to $5,775 per year. Applicants under the age of 24 must have a parent or guardian who died in the Armed Forces after 9/11 and be enrolled at least part-time at an accredited college or university in the United States. It is intended for US citizens or eligible non-citizens who meet the Federal Pell Grant requirements except for the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

NCAA Graduate Student Research Grant

The NCAA provides a $7,500 Graduate Student Research Grant each year to encourage master’s and Ph.D. students at member schools to conduct cutting-edge research on collegiate student-athletes psychosocial well-being. Graduates with a focus on the social and behavioral sciences, including sports psychology, are given preference. Qualified recipients will be U.S. citizens, pursuing accredited U.S. study, demonstrating research competence, and submitting research proposals worthy of publication in NCAA Champion magazine.

AAUW Career Development Grant

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) provides Career Development Grants ranging from $2,000 to $12,000 to female bachelor’s degree holders pursuing a master’s program, post-baccalaureate certificate, or professional degree. Women of color and women entering non-traditional fields are given preference. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and enrolled in regionally accredited four-year colleges for on-campus or distance learning to be eligible for these college grants.

There are a lot of grants available that cover different categories. Even if you do not meet the low-income requirements, you may be eligible for merit-based grants for research, community projects, or service agreements. Always make sure you research properly before applying for a grant so as to maximize your chances of being selected.

Learning Textured Hair Should be Mandatory in Beauty School

By Department of Education Grants

In most cosmetology schools around the country, it is not mandatory to learn how to style natural, textured, African American hair. The way that black people maintain their hair is different from white people. In the wrong hands, the results could be disastrous. Some stylists have to go to separate schools to learn how to take care of and style hair outside of their culture, which is unacceptable in the United States. Read More
